Hit Refresh by Satya Nadella is a compelling narrative of a chief executive who set out to transform a vaunted software giant that had lost its direction and industry leadership over the years. Satya starts of with his personal journey from Hyderabad and how he ended up in Redmond. He gets personal by describing his journey raising kids with special needs. Satya provides great insights into the roots and culture of Microsoft. However, over the years, this culture that had helped it become a dominant force had deteriorated into one of fiefdoms and arrogance. Satya goes into a lot of detail of how he rekindled the soul of Microsoft by moving to a culture of collaboration both within and with partners as well as competitors alike. Satya moved Microsoft from a Windows first strategy to a Cloud and Mobile first strategy. During his reign Microsoft has taken many decisions that would have seemed unthinkable in the past including moving away from the Windows phone business, embracing both Apple iOS/Google Android platform for Office as first class citizens and above all embracing Linux by supporting it in Microsoft Azure cloud. Satya spends a great deal of time in the book looking into the future of technology including Mixed Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing. He talks about his views on the role of companies in a global society and company values of privacy, security and free speech in a digital age. This book is an easy read and provides inspiration to everyone on how to transform their organization and individual self irrespective of the position they are in.
