Can you guess the Technology?

A few weeks back my daughter shared a wonderful article from her school project, essentially a debate about whether a particular technology was a blessing or a curse. I thought I would share this with you all and ask you to guess which technology the debate is all about. I have picked a select few sentences on either side of the debate for you to guess.



A Curse?

  • Just another disintegrating toy for advertisers to use in pestering us
  • A blatant signboard erected to bring us news of fuel saving motor cars
  • God's great gift to man, eliminated that last dangerous chance for Satan to find mischief for idle hands
  • Mr and Mrs Babbitt who used to make a pretense at conversation, now no longer go to that trouble
  • Thus dies the art of conversation
  • During the political campaign.... as they read speeches written by ghost writers
  • It is about to set up a new culture in America
  • Advertising agencies go on killing it
  • "Killed by Advertising"
  • Anyone not knowing America, would conclude, that some tremendous message of vital import was being given to the citizenry.

A Blessing?

  • The Greeks would not have forseen its revolutionary effects upon the mechanism of democratic government
  • The transmission of intelligence has reached its height
  • Our political parties were slow to see the possibilities
  • A persistent weakness in our American scheme of government has been the lack of popular interest in politics and the failure of a great number of citizens to vote
  • The effectiveness was demonstrated both to the voter and the candidate
  • Deserves credit for stirring up interest in politics
  • Only means of instantaneous general communication yet devised by man
  • The news of any important occurrence is flashed almost immediately to every part of the globe
  • The thought currents of all humanity will mingle

Autumn's Artistry

This past weekend, I embarked on a journey that rekindled my spirit and filled me with a renewed sense of wonder. Book Review: Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1845.Into_the_Wild I had mistakenly avoided reading this classic book by Jon Krakauer all these years. I was very pleasantly surprised to read this gripping real life tale about a young guy named Chris McCandless who rebelled against his parents, disappeared into thin air after graduation and set out to live an unknown life in the wild criss-crossing the American west and finally ending up in Alaska only to meet an untimely death. Jon traces Chris's young life, with his sometimes troubled relationship with his parents, his many soul searching journeys to find his inner self, his quest to find how much he could stretch himself and (on many occasions) his eschewing of most modern trappings of life including money. Unfortunately Chris's biggest asset, his youth, proves to be deadly in the end due to his in-experience and under estimation of the Alaskan wild.
